1. Prepare the passage
Read the passage and listen to a recitation while following each word. Identify unfamiliar words. Resolve uncertain pronunciation before repeating a passage many times.
Keep a consistent text as your reference. A translation can help you follow the general meaning, without replacing the Arabic text or an explanation from a teacher.
2. Practise a small unit
Begin with a short verse or a suitable portion, guided by your teacher on where to pause. Listen, repeat while looking, then try from memory.
If you get stuck, check the missing part and try again. Adapt the number of repetitions to your hesitations: a fixed count does not guarantee that you have memorized the passage.
3. Connect the verses
When you add a verse, recite it together with the one before it. Transitions may need more practice than individual verses learned in isolation.
Test recall after a break as well. Repeating immediately after a recording is different from remembering the passage the next day. Record where you hesitate to focus the next revision.
4. Make room for revision
Start your next session with something you already learned. If errors build up, temporarily reduce new material and strengthen previous passages.
Have a qualified person listen to your recitation regularly. Audio and speech recognition can support practice, but do not replace human tajweed correction. Adjust your pace to the difficulty of the material and the time you have.
A simple memorization session
- Review a familiar passage first.
- Read and listen to the new passage, identifying difficult words.
- Recite without looking, then check your hesitations.
- Connect it to the previous passage and revisit it next time.
